Clayton is a small town situated mostly in Kent County, Delaware, extending into New Castle County, all part of the Dover metropolitan area. Covering a land area of less than two square miles, Clayton is home to nearly 3,200 people.
The town is named for John Middleton Clayton, who served in the mid-19th century as a U.S. Senator from Delaware before and after a short term as U.S. Secretary of State. Originally a railroad hub, Clayton today is primarily a residential community housing many Dover, Newark and Wilmington commuters. Route 6 is the main road through Clayton, heading west to Blackiston and east to Smyrna.
